Description:

This worksheet presents a real-life algebra problem involving a system of linear equations. Students are asked to determine how many apples and oranges a vendor sold, given the total quantity and total revenue. This requires translating a word problem into two algebraic equations and solving them using substitution.

By embedding the problem in a practical context, the task strengthens mathematical understanding (e.g. formulation, manipulation, and interpretation of equations), while also promoting the use of English as the medium of instruction and explanation.

The worksheet supports CLIL learning by:
- Connecting content (math) with language use
- Encouraging structured reasoning in English
- Providing step-by-step scaffolding to guide learners through algebraic problem-solving

This task aligns with VO Kerndoelen 21 and 25:
- Developing mathematical reasoning and structured argumentation
- Using formulas and algebraic representations to model relationships

It also supports the transition from BICS to CALP through:
- Functional academic language (e.g., "substitute", "isolate", "solve")
- Encouraging complete sentence explanations and interpretation of solutions in context
