Practical Assignment – Descriptive Statistics
Description:
This bilingual project-based assignment engages students in the full statistical cycle: from formulating a research question to collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data. It blends mathematics and academic English with a focus on communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.
Students:
- Work both individually and in groups
- Practice statistical skills such as calculating mean, median, mode, and creating visual representations (bar charts, pie charts, histograms, etc.)
- Conduct and document a mini research project in English
- Reflect on the reliability of their data and draw conclusions based on analysis
This activity supports Kerndoelen 21, 25, and 27:
- Structuring mathematical reasoning and drawing conclusions
- Using formulas and visual tools to represent data
- Systematically organizing and critically interpreting statistical information
CLIL elements include:
- Strong emphasis on subject-specific academic language (CALP), such as "mean," "histogram," "interpretation"
- Use of functional language for reporting and presenting findings (e.g. “From the graph we can see that…”, “The data shows that…”)
- Opportunities to develop writing skills in mathematics through structured report writing
- Encouragement of collaborative learning and peer discussion in English
With clear expectations, scaffolding, and a detailed rubric, this is a prime example of an integrated CLIL mathematics assessment task that develops both content knowledge and language skills.
